Written in 1930, the book, which Faulkner described as a “tour de force”, tracks the story of a poor Mississippi farm woman whose family’s innermost thoughts come alive in the days of her death. It unfolds in a stream of consciousness technique in a fictional rendering of Faulkner’s own hometown.

An excerpt from the celebrated novel is here interpreted in two different ways.

Dramatization (1956)

A sampling of the book’s fifteen narrators, in monologues and dramatic scenes.

Cast:

Mildred Dunnock, with Robert Armstrong, Ralph Chambers, Philip Coolidge, Warren Feigin, Edith King, Robert Lansing, Susan Oliver, Richard Shepard

Dance/Drama (1965)

Excerpts of a dance interpretation by choreographer/dancer/actress Valerie Bettis.

Cast: Valerie Bettis, Thatcher Clarke, Patrick Cummings, Leland Palmer, William Reilly, and Joyce Trisler; with actor Lawrence Luckinbill.
