The painter J.M.W. Turner is widely recognised as Englands's greatest painter. Tate has the world's finest collection of his work. Turner at Tate explores Turner's art through many of his best-known canvases and exquisite sketches and watercolours, all newly filmed in HDTV from the originals.

Incorporating the landscapes and places that inspired the works, the film provides an overview of Turner's life and - in an accessible and engrossing way - of critical approaches to his art. Contributions from Tate curators, and from other leading commenatators, are interwoven with selections from Turner's own words and with contemporary reflections of his eccentric character.

The DVD features ten additional short films, each of which considers in detail a major work, including Fishermen at Sea (1796), The Decline of the Carthaginian Empire (1817), The Sun of Venice Going to Sea (1843) and Northam Castle, Sunrise (c. 1845-50).

2006, 60mins + 10 x 3min films.

Tate is an institution that houses the United Kingdom's national collection of British art, and international modern and contemporary art. It is a network of five art museums: Tate Britain, London, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives, Cornwall, Tate Contemporary and Tate Modern, London, with a complementary website, Tate Online. Tate is not a government institution, but its main sponsor is the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
