David Perry is one of Australia's most significant moving image artists. In a career spanning over forty years, innovation figures emphatically: in his role in the pioneering avantgarde film group Ubu; teaching video and television techniques and making important video art in the formative days of the medium; and in his continued creation of complex experimental film works.

The Refracting Glasses
(of time; distance; narrative; technology)
Constant Malernik, artist and filmmaker, is obsessed by the history of the Russian revolution. He makes images in homage to artists of the twentieth century, especially the constructivist V.E.Tatlin. He travels to New York, then to his past in Australia where he meets the notorious fakes, Ern and Ethel Malley. With his partner Lydia he travels to Russia at the time of the overthrow of the Communist Party. In Russia, Malernik films Lydia’s first meeting with her family. He also unearths some little-known facts about Tatlin’s flying machine, the Letatlin.

Writer - producer - director - editor: David Perry
Music: Dmitri Shostakovich
Director of Photography: Simon Smith and David Perry
Computer Animation: Pavel Kyral

David Perry is unique among Australian artists in that he is equally competent in making paintings, drawings, prints, posters, photographs, films and videotapes. In work encompassing more than half a century, he has demonstrated his proficiency in these media, with his art exhibited in international film and video festivals and leading art galleries. To some extent, this versatility has counted against him, since he has been unclassifiable, a hybrid for which there is no name, other than multimedia artist, though this has come to mean someone who combines mediums, which David rarely does.
