“Performance seeks a kind of psychic and political efficacy, which is to say, performance makes a claim about the Real-impossible” Peggy Phelan
This book attempts to indentify the theory that has inform the work of the physical theatre company Performance [Re]Search - work that has focused on the use of the body as an instrument for writing theatre - and illustrates how this theory has been investigated and deployed in the making of performance. Previously unpublished material has been assembled from the company’s four major productions: Living is a Horizontal Fall, Disappeariences, Silent Moves and Crossing Body Shadow.
Disc 1: E-Book: Performance Performing Theatre (PDF)
Disc 2: Supplementary DVD - impressionistic production images aiming to recreate the ambience of the visually rich live performances.
The recordings of the four productions are available individually or in a set.
Serge Tampalini: I think my theatre work may be more clearly understood when seen as a vector of the more complex matrix of performance. Like performing, it gestures towards the value of experiences which leave no visible trace of their subjective encounters, relying solely on the intensity of their appearance for the strength of their affect. The more intense their appearance, the more intensely their disappearance is felt. The “after-effect of disappearance is the experience of subjectivity itself.” The American performance theorist Peggy Phelan’s use of the term “after effect” is a reference to a visual phenomenon associated with our perception of colour. When two colours of the same tone and hue appear in close proximity they produce a flicker. The intensity of this effect can induce an after image; i.e. a colour patch that seems to float in front of our eyes. The more intense the effect the longer the after image remains.
