In Painting Australia six prominent Australian landscape painters take us to their favourite locations, those often hidden and secret places that inspire their work and ignite their passion. Part painting competition, part off-road adventure tour, Painting Australia is a series that incorporates art, history, culture, literature, architecture, travel, and explores some of the most remote and beautiful regions of Australia.
Each episode features a masterclass where three 'emerging' local artists are challenged to complete a work interpreting the landscape in two days. The emerging artists are guided by a master artist, who provides invaluable tips and tricks for their work.
For each of the emerging artists the process is a transformative experience.

Episode 1: Bendigo
We meet up with three local artists and set up camp at the Ballersteadt Gold Mine in Ironback Gully. Over the next two days John Wolseley will spend time with Karen Annett-Thomas, Colin Bowes and David Marshall as they are inspired by this moonscape deserted mine.

Episode 2: Simpson
Desert With award winning artist Mandy Martin, our three artists, Bek Mifsud, Annabel Tully and Noel Miller, brave the heat to capture the beauty of this remote area of Australia. It is not just the colours that inform their work but the rich histories of the people who have lived here and still call this area home.

Episode 3: Braidwood
This location has been chosen by one of Australia's most renowned landscape artists - John R Walker. John's a Braidwood local and passionate environmentalist. Even though he's a five times Archibald Prize finalist for portraiture, landscape remains his first love.

Episode 4: Byron Bay
This world heritage listed rainforest on the Byron Bay hinterland provides a magnificent inspiration to our artists this week. Multi award winning artist Jenny Sages leads three locals, Hobie Porter, Stephen Phibbs and Linelle Stepto on a two masterclass in this lush area near Mullumbimby, in northern NSW.

Episode 5: Kakadu
This location has been chosen by Christine Christophersen, an artist from the Top End of the Northern Territory who is really making her presence felt around the world. She is joined by three local artists Gabriel Maralngurra, Dorothea Fejo and Caroline Rannersberger.

Episode 6: Cooktown
This remote coastline, named when Captain Cook ran aground here in 1770, still retains a sense of mystery and discovery. The three artists who join Tom Risley for this Queensland painting advenute are Silas Hobson, Sonya Olsen and Daniel Wallwork.

Claude Gonzalez is a film director that is known for Global Haywire, 12 Steps and Station to Station. He has been nominated for the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Documentary.
