The film traces the journey we each make: the journey that allows us to become independent, free from our parents and elders but still relating to them. Nora Heysen’s search for independence was more dramatic and more public than most because of the great renown of her father and because her journey is intimately documented in her highly prized art works, and her own words on film and tape. Nora Heysen was the first woman to win the Archibald Prize and the first Australian woman war artist. A recluse for much of her life her work is beginning to receive the attention it deserves.

An extensive on-camera interview with Nora Heysen at her home in Sydney’s Hunters Hill forms the basis of this insightful documentary, and many of her best works are shown: portraits, flower pieces, war paintings, scenes of South Sea life.

Nora Heysen AM was an Australian artist, the first woman to win the prestigious Archibald Prize in 1938 for portraiture and the first Australian woman appointed as an official war artist.
