'Facts For Fiction' ('Was übersetzt ist noch nicht angekommen') (1996) is a personal travelogue of a New York City night of several cab journeys, filmed without thrills and largely in real time. Jeff, an acquaintance of Pilz and also a film-maker, regularly earns some extra cash as a cab-driver. We first see him in a colleague's taxi: Jeff can't get into his own cab because he left the keys in. This first journey is a conversation between drivers. The next trip, when Jeff heads into the night and goes to spots in Manhatten where people might need a ride (nightclubs, discos) results in a conversation about people, life and art. Most important is the unexpected encounter, the unique aspect of riding in a cab.

'Park Of Remembrance' ('Parco delle Rimembranze') (1987) is a film which offers us the opportunity to reflect, to observe and to listen and thereby experience something that happens when we slowly close our eyes and expose ourselves, not yet asleep to dreams, to uncertainness and chance, to unwanted events.
(Michael Pilz)

Michael Pilz, born (1943) in Gmünd, Lower Austria, close to where the „Iron Curtain" used to separate Austria and Czechoslovakia. In 1954 he started to take pictures and work with 8 mm film. In 1956 he moved to Vienna and became influenced by work of Jackson Pollock, Karl Prantl, Robert Frank, Jean-Luc Godard, Michelangelo Antonioni, Robert Bresson, etc. Later on he developed a growing interest in the technical, material, and mental aspects of cinematography as well as the various ways of expressing the subconscious in film which lead in his experimental period of the sixties. He had, above all, experimented with different cameras and the film material itself (all forms of direct treatment such as painting, scratching), handheld and out-of-control-moving cameras, and absurd, that is to say anarchist staging. He took various approaches to examine pure („basic") cinematic phenomena. During the seventies Pilz worked as author and director in different genres for various departments of ORF, Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (cultural programs, entertainment, documentaries, including movie Franz Grimus, 1977). Since 1983, Pilz has engaged in delivering occasional lectures and holding workshops on aesthetics and experimental filmmaking, mainly abroad.
In 1988/1990 he made Feldberg - experimental fiction feature film without dialogs.

Whether he is working in the so-called documentary or so-called fictional mode, with 16mm, 35mm or high-8-video: for Pilz the central issue is our perception and the film or video is a disposition, a condition for the temporal and spatial organization of a reflection. This refers in the first instance to the mere listening and observing, but also to an intuitive sense for encounters with people, for their ways of dealing with the space within which they move and the things that surround them. This sense of perception permeates his entire work.
