Gregory Doran's film of his acclaimed RSC production. Antony Sher and Harriet Walter star in this screen version of William Shakespeare's classic story of tyranny and ambition. On the stage this Royal Shakespeare Company presentation was universally lauded when it opened at Stratford's Swan Theatre. Following sell-out seasons there and in London, the production also played in the United States, where The New York Times claimed Doran's interpretation as a "harrowing and disturbingly funny parable for the dawn of the 21st century''

To make the screen version, director Gregory Doran worked with all of the original cast and filmed at London's Roundhouse. Brilliantly shot by the director of photography Ernie Vincze, the production uses the edgy techniques of fly-on-the-wall documentaries. The effect is raw, intimate and strikingly dynamic.

Illuminations is releasing Macbeth for the first time on video and DVD; the DVD version will include exclusive interviews about the play, the production and their performances with Antony Sher, Harriet Walter and Gregory Doran.

"The best television shakespearee I have ever seen" Daily Mail

Gregory Doran is an English director known for his Shakespearean work. The Sunday Times called him 'one of the great Shakespearians of his generation'. Doran is currently Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, succeeding Michael Boyd in September 2012.

"In my lifetime, I've seen only a handful of successful productions (Of Macbeth): Trevor Nunn's Other Place version in 1976, Ninagawa's Japanese elegy in 1986 and now Doran's intimate RSC production." - Michael Billington
