Disc 1: PDF: including the Script and notesDisc 2: a recording of the play performed by the students of Xaverian on DVD.
The Beggar's Opera was written in 1728 by John Gay. It is one of the watershed plays in Augustan drama and is the only example of the once thriving genre of satirical ballad opera to remain popular today. Ballad operas were satiric musical plays that used some of the conventions of opera, but without recitative. The Beggar’s Opera inspired many of 20th-century’s writers to make their own adaptations. One of the most highly regarded arrangements is Bertolt Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera opened in 1928, on the 200th anniversary of the original production. Brecht and composer Kurt Weill created a popular new musical adaptation of the work in Germany entitled Die Dreigroschenoper.
The script for this version of the play was written by Wynn Moran and Rob Faulkner especially for Xaverian College, Manchester, UK. It goes back to John Gay's original plot as the original and most of its characters, whilst adding some new ones and changing the setting of the action to pre-Revolution, mid 1800s Russia. The action takes place in Russia in the mid 1800s.
