The Critically acclaimed documentary now remastered and available on DVD.

The documentary is first and foremost a celebration of Charles Blackman's life and art . The film is introduced by Barry Humphries with excerpts from one of his early poems " The Ballad of Charles Blackman". Apart from a few lateral asides the film takes a chronological voyage, from Charles's memories of childhood up until the present time, through the " tunnel of adolescence," and the darker aspects of Charles's soul, across the seas to London and back again. Along the way the film examines Charles's contribution to the development of a unique sense of Australian identity. More than any other male Australian painter, Charles has painted from a feminine perspective - " I'm like a cork on an ocean of femininity".

Charles explores areas of feeling that have traditionally been suppressed - feelings of love, guilt, tenderness, sadness and isolation. This humanist approach changed perceptions of how we as Australians and the international community, saw this country. The epithet "Big,Tough and Tender" applied by one English critics to Charles's work stuck for Australian art in general.
