To make BEHAVIORS OF THE BACKPACKER, Sandor Lau, a Chinese/Hungarian-American film student and Fulbright scholar, walked 500km alone from Auckland to Cape Reinga, New Zealand's geographic and spiritual tip. This black comedy road trip documentary records the stories of backpackers from around the world, organic farmers, hostel owners, tour operators, Maori communities, and the filmmaker himself. On his journey, Sandor discovers how much a toothbrush handle weighs, why we spend our lives walking backwards, and the true distance to home.

Sándor Lau is a recovering writer and filmmaker threatening to relapse. The former TV reporter is an Eagle Scout and Fulbright Scholar. Sándor was a nominee for New Zealand’s New Filmmaker of the year and has directed two feature documentary films, Squeegee Bandit and Sándor’s New Zealand Trail (Behaviors of the Backpacker). And he can make fire with sticks. The purpose of his life is to share grand adventures with his seven billion closest friends. Sándor grew up in rural Colorado, USA, and attended the University of Oklahoma as a National Merit Scholar, studying abroad in Mexico, Spain, France and China. He attended film school as a US Fulbright Scholar at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and worked as a TV reporter on the TVNZ program, Asia Down Under. Sándor’s award-winning writing and photography have been published around the world in magazines, newspapers and anthologies. He lives in Portland, Oregon, and runs an investment company, Noted Financial while searching for the right patron to relapse as a writer and filmmaker.
